Greenville County will be in the spotlight again next weekend
over its policies on a holiday recognizing the Rev. Martin Luther
King Jr.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson will lead a "Day of Dignity" march with
NAACP President Kweisi Mfume in Greenville on May 17 in recognition
of the 49th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's Brown v. Board
of Education lawsuit and to call attention to the county's lack of a
paid King holiday.
The Brown decision helped end the separate-but-equal policies
practiced around the Old South. Now, in terms of access to public
accommodations, "we have equality," Jackson said.
But "49 years later, there are New South challenges," including
poverty, educational equality and access to capital, Jackson
said.
Last month, Greenville County Council approved five permanent
county holidays, none of which was Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Employees then would vote on the other five holidays the county will
observe, meaning the county still might not have a holiday honoring
the slain civil rights leader.
Charleston Police Seek Slaying Suspect
CHARLESTON Charleston police are searching for a
25-year-old man charged with killing one man and wounding another in
a shooting in downtown Charleston.
Investigators say Dino Scott fired shots after 19-year-old
Theodore Casey refused to give him some money. Casey was shot in the
abdomen, but is expected to live, said Lt. Richard Moser.
Rahsheen Townsend, 20, died Wednesday night from a gunshot wound
to the abdomen. Townsend apparently was shot when he tried to help
Casey, detective Sgt. Michael Gordon said.
Arrest warrants charge Scott with murder, assault and battery
with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during a violent
crime, Gordon said. Scott is a former Florence resident who has been
working in downtown Charleston, Gordon said.
Some area residents have questioned the time it took for
emergency medical crews to arrive and administer treatment, saying
Townsend waited for 20 minutes before receiving first aid.
County dispatch records show an ambulance arrived four minutes
after the first 911 call came in at 7:05 p.m.
Man shot to death at Myrtle Beach home
MYRTLE BEACH An unidentified man has been shot to death
outside a Myrtle Beach home, but authorities are not saying much
else about the shooting.
The man was shot about 1:40 a.m. on Friday and was pronounced
dead 40 minutes later at Conway Hospital, said Horry County Deputy
Coroner Dan Bellamy.
Investigators are working to see whether more than one person was
involved in the shooting. Police say the motive is unclear.
Investigators say they are questioning someone in connection with
the death, but would not released his name because he has not been
charged.
