Our son and his family are South Carolina residents. We are currently in the process of purchasing 910 acres in Hampton and Allendale counties for the purpose of farming and creating a commercial hunting lodge. We also currently lease approximately 6000 acres for hunting and have three hunt clubs. We as a family are committed to managing all of our property in a responsible manner. We have self-imposed limits on age and size of bucks, and believe in the harvesting of certain numbers of does, as provided for in the Anterless Deer Quota Program, in order to maintain a healthy deer herd. At this point in time, we oppose the above proposed bill, as it is written, that is now in the South Carolina House for consideration. We would respectfully ask that you carefully consider the economic ramifications of this bill arbitrarily being pushed through as it is written. As I am sure you are aware, deer hunting is a large part of the economy in many of the rural areas of South Carolina. The income that hunters provide spreads far beyond the hunting operation itself. Hotel operators, restaurants, retail and grocery stores and even the farmers who sell corn and other feed products all depend on this income, not to mention the people that are employed by this industry. Another consideration needs to be the effect of a reduced deer harvest on the farming industry itself. This could be disastrous for farmers. We would not be opposed to a bill that allows for the issuance of antlered deer tags with the purchase of a hunting license. However, the ADQP needs to stay in place as it is. There should be no restrictions on using the buck tags on ADQP property. We should not be restricted from managing our property as we see fit. Thank you for your consideration in this matter. Sincerely, James and Vivian Wright
