Sanford spokesman returns to camp

January 21, 2003

COLUMBIA — Gov. Mark Sanford’s former spokesman has returned to the Governor’s office as press secretary, saying he was inspired by the Governor’s inaugural speech to return from the private sector.

Will Folks, 28, had left the Sanford camp following the November election. He said he had already incorporated his consulting business, View Politik, and was in business for a week before the Governor’s speech and its description of "servant leadership" changed his mind.

He said he wasn’t drawn by an offer of a big salary from the frugal Governor.

"We’re talking about Mark Sanford here — he offered me free paper clips," he said.

Mr. Folks said he and his dog named Issues have already set up house in the state capitol.
