SC lawmakers: Ware Shoals case may prompt age of consent change

(Columbia, SC-AP) January 27, 2007 - Some South Carolina lawmakers say an investigation at Ware Shoals High School involving students, a cheerleading coach and two National Guardsmen should prompt the Legislature to consider changing the age of consent.

According to Greenwood County sheriff's reports a South Carolina National Guardsman and a former cheerleading coach each had sex with students. But the adults do not face sex charges because the students were at least 16. That's old enough to consent in South Carolina.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell says he supports changing the age of consent to 18.

Former cheerleading coach 28-year-old Jill Moore is charged with supplying alcohol and cigarettes to students numerous times and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Moore resigned earlier this month.
