Please tell her to stand firm. Her compassion is very important to our state moving forward. It is discouraging to see how much hate and lack of compassion there is among those who claim to support the flag. No one is questioning the heritage value, but the placement of this flag on capital grounds in the 60s has always symbolized racism to many. It creates an environment that teaches our children (including Roof) it is ok to hate. In 2008, when Obama was first running for president, my son was in middle school (in the upstate). He said there were kids on the school bus claiming they would kill Obama if he was elected. Where did they get these ideas? We also have black friends and colleagues then who said they feared for Obamas life if he was elected. This was not about political differences. We have long known that these sentiments still thrive in SC. Even when black students marched at Clemson this January, there were hateful comments in social media, including telling them to leave and go to a black college if they didn't like it here. Taking down the flag from the capital says all the citizens in the state are welcome and respected. This needs to happen ASAP. Don't let the threats and fear win.
