COLUMBIA - South Carolina drivers would have more options for their license tags under a bill awaiting Gov. Mark Sanford's signature.

State lawmakers approved 15 new license tags this year.

The tags would allow drivers to show their support for groups such as Marine Corps League, the Fraternal Order of Police, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, Emergency Medical Service, Boy Scouts of America, Native Americans and the South Carolina Peach Council.

South Carolina already has 95 different license plates available. Adding 15 more license tags could cause confusion, some law enforcement agencies say.

"It seems to me that the more tags you get floating around out there, the more likely you are not to discern, at least in a split second, where it belongs," said Capt. Steve Moore, interim chief for the Mauldin police department.

Legislation for the plates was one of many bills sent to Sanford's office on the last day of the legislative session, Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said.
