AG FIELD DAY CELEBRATES LEE COUNTY’S 100TH BIRTHDAY

BISHOPVILLE---Lee County Clemson University Extension Service will hold an AG FIELD DAY on Saturday, March 2, 2002, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mac Stuckey Lane in Bishopville. The Ag Field Day will be held in conjunction with Lee County’s CELEBRATION-100, commemorating the county’s 100th birthday.

The event is designed to commemorate days gone by centering around working horses and mules as they demonstrate how it once was.  Members of the state’s Draft Horse and Mule Associations plan to bring their working stock to pull various equipment used years ago as a way of life.

Farrier demonstrations and an operating saw mill are scheduled.  Wagon rides will be offered to the young and old alike.  A traveling petting zoo will be offered for the younger children.  If enough interest is expressed, a plowing contest will be held for those bringing working stock to the event.  Old equipment will be on display.  Local equipment dealers have been invited to bring various modern tractors and equipment to display or demonstrate to compare with the old way. An invitation has been sent to antique tractor associations in the state to join in the festivities.

A family event, the Ag Field Day is free and open to the public. The local 4-H club will offer hot dogs and hamburgers for a nominal fee to help raise money for the county’s 4-H organization.  The SC Cotton Museum is also participating in the celebration, and numerous displays and videos of interviews with some of older folks will be available for viewing the entire week.

The AG Field Day event will be held at Mac Stuckey Lane, east of Bishopville on East Church Street (Hwy. 341/527) just east of the Lee Correctional Institute.  Look for AG FIELD DAY signs.  The site is two miles from downtown Bishopville or 0.8 mile from Interstate 20 (exit #120).  Exit onto Hwy. 341 towards Bishopville.
