A Senate committee has approved a bill that
would allow troopers and other police to stop a motorist just
for not wearing a seat belt.
Currently, South
Carolina law only allows officers to ticket motorists if they
are pulled over for another offense.
The Senate
Transportation Committee passed the proposal Wednesday on
a seven-to-six vote. Anyone convicted of not wearing a seat
belt would be fined 25 dollars.
But some senators
opposed to the bill will likely keep it from coming before the
entire Senate before this session ends June Fifth.
