Unknown powder closes Clemson post office

Authorities were still waiting on test results Sunday to determine what was in the white powder found at a Clemson post office, but the building is expected to open for business as usual today, said Clemson Police Chief Jimmy Dixon.

"We're not going to do anything further until we get the results back from the lab," he said.

The building on College Avenue was shut down for 30 minutes Saturday after the substance was found in a letter. Terrorism isn't suspected, authorities said.

White powder has been cause for alarm since anthrax was sent by mail to lawmakers when the nation was still shaken by the Sept. 11 terror attacks. No one has been arrested in those incidents.

On Oct. 15, a postal center near Pelham Road was shut down for 11 hours after ricin, a potentially lethal substance, was found. Officials believe it was sent by someone upset with trucking regulations.

A postal worker found the powder in Clemson, authorities said. No one was hurt.

Dixon, who collected the powder himself, said it looked like baby powder, and he had no reason to believe it was ricin.

The substance was turned over to the FBI, Dixon said. The State Law Enforcement Division was also involved in the investigation.
