Ms Thomas & Ms Dupree,

I am petitioning the state of South Carolina to recognize and declare, Saturday, March 7, 2015 as Narcolepsy Awareness Day (also known as Suddenly Sleepy Saturday). This day is part of National Sleep Awareness Week (NSAW), March 2-8. NSAW is an annual public education campaign that brings awareness to the importance of sleep for optimal health and safety.

This is my third year to petition the state for Narcolepsy Awareness Day.  I apologize for not getting this to you sooner.  I've been struggling with personal issues in my life (2 weeks ago I had a hearing appealing the denials of my social security disability request, my husband is active duty military and is three months into a year long assignment overseas, and I'm struggling with health issues).  Narcolepsy and Cataplexy take a very real and massive toll on my everyday life.  In the process of trying to educate the public about the disease, I tend to address the facts and figures and leave out the personal side.  I'm realizing that by doing this, I'm putting on a false face and making myself appear better than I am.  I decided to go ahead and be straightforward and honest.  I'm not using Narcolepsy as an excuse for my poor planning.  I'm trying to explain how it affects and further complicates every aspect of my life.

Enough about me, I'm hoping you will be able to process the proclamation request on such late notice.  If it's not possible, I completely understand.
I don't have any events planned for this year, I am hoping to obtain the proclamation to keep a standard of having it every year.  Hopefully next year I will be in a better place to organize awareness events.

A scanned copy of last years proclamation is attached for your reference.

Should you have any questions or require additional information, don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your time and assistance, even if it's not possible to get it approved this year.

Ms Thomas & Ms Dupree,

I am petitioning the state of South Carolina to recognize and declare, Saturday, March 8, 2014 as Narcolepsy Awareness Day (also known as Suddenly Sleepy Saturday). This day is part of National Sleep Awareness Week (NSAW), March 2-9. NSAW is an annual public education campaign that brings awareness to the importance of sleep for optimal health and safety.

This is my second year to petition the state for Narcolepsy Awareness Day. Last year it was approved, however, the process took longer than I expected and the I received the proclamation just a few days prior to the event.  Unfortunately, this made it impossible to coordinate an educational/awareness campaign.  Fortunately, I was advised that this year won't take as long!
