Sanford says he's humbled with second term

(Columbia-AP) January 10, 2007 - Governor Mark Sanford says he's humbled by the opportunity to serve four more years as governor of South Carolina.

He becomes the third governor to win a second four-year term in South Carolina. The others were Democrat Dick Riley in 1978 and 1982 and Republican Carroll Campbell in 1986 and 1990.

Sanford says he's grayer and more tempered by reality than when he took the oath four years ago.

Sanford says education is more important than ever.

He says he wants to make South Carolina second-to-none in offering economic opportunities.

Sanford called for a commitment to excellence.

He told those at the State House for his second inauguration that the answer to many of the state's problems lies not in more government, but in more freedom.

He says it's time to restructure state government and says government should grow at what he called "sustainable rates."

The benediction was delivered by Bob Jones the third, former president of Bob Jones University in Greenville.

Shortly after Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer and other constitutional officers, Sanford was sworn into office by Chief Justice Jean Toal. Education Superintendent Jim Rex is the only Democrat in the group.

After the ceremony, Governor Sanford and his wife Jenny opened the Governor's Mansion to the people.

The governor and first lady posed for photos and shook hands for about two hours Wednesday afternoon while their four boys played football on the lawn with their cousins.

Sanford says the two-hour open house symbolizes his belief in open government.

Geri Warren of Greenville says she is a proud South Carolinian and proud to have Sanford as her governor.
