In 2010, he received a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Anderson University. He was one of the only 3 that graduated from this program and he was on the Dean's List. He went onto Middle Tennessee State University under the Common Market program. By 2012, he earned his 2nd Bachelor's Degree in Audio Production graduating again with honors. Today, he is $30,000.00 in debt to student loans not counting the $13,000.00 we still owe in parent plus loans. Most of that debt is owed to SC Student Loan. It was more affordable for him to go to school in another state than in SC where all of his family lives and pays taxes. Most of the debt was incurred his sophomore year at Anderson University because he lost his funding because his GPA was 1/10 of a point below the limit. It took him 3 semesters to get that tenth of a point back. He proved he was a hard worker as a student at both universities he attended. He still keeps in contact with professors from both; he was the kind of student they are interested in seeing how life turns out for him. He is struggling and so are we trying to help him pay off his debt. What about those that did not choose teaching as their career? He works in the music industry with no benefits. He has learned to be creative to be able to continue to live in Nashville in hopes that one day his education will pay off. Fortunately for him, his landlord has medical issues so he drives him to the doctor and helps out around the property in exchange for lowering his rent. He has taken down Christmas decorations, run personal errands and cleaned the pool of his employers to earn extra money to have routine maintenance done on his vehicle. He questions his decision to pursue higher education because he knows many that didn't and they have good paying jobs with benefits and no student loan debt. Graduating from college with a high GPA deserves some type of debt forgiveness as well. I know most do not consider music a career but think about the number of times a day you are exposed to music. It is proven that is has an uplifting effect, conveys powerful messages, and soothes a weary soul. Here is a sample of his education. This recording is 100% him. He wrote the song, played the instruments, recorded, and produced the track using equipment he has bought on credit in his home studio. If there is no way to reduce his debt at least support a SC artist by purchasing his music. http://elirhodes.bandcamp.com/track/kudzu-and-clover Thank you for your consideration!
