Bill Would Put Cameras at S.C.
Intersections |
(Columbia) - Right now, it's just a traffic
signal at the corner of Devine and Rosewood. But it's possible this
light, and others like it, could soon grow eyes … the kind of eyes
that would be aimed right at your car if you try and beat that red
light.
“I think it's a great idea," said Gregg
Liles.
Liles has worked on the corner of the busy
intersection for five years. Every day, he watches drivers push the
envelope.
“Yeah, I see a lot of wrecks happen at this
intersection,” he said. “A lot of runnin' the red
lights."
And he's all for a bill that's being debated in the
State Senate, a bill that would put cameras on traffic lights all
over the state.
“A camera doesn't lie,” he said. “It's gonna
record your license plate, and it's for everybody to
see."
News19 put up our own camera at an intersection for
half an hour. Soon, we had one violation on tape. Then another, and
another. But the most startling was the last: a school bus running
the light, almost one second after it turned red.
“That don't
make you feel good,” said William Deaton, who was right behind the
bus. “Especially if there's a bunch of children on
there." |
