Scientists estimate time Hunley commander's watch stopped

North Charleston, SC (AP) - Researchers working on the preservation of the Confederate submarine Hunley says the commander's pocket watch stopped at 8:49.  But they don't know if that was morning or night. Or if it stopped when the sub sank or when the watch wound down. The Hunley was the first Confederate submarine to sink an enemy warship. The sub sank off the coast of Sullivans Island shortly after it sank the Union blockade ship Housatonic in 1864. The Union ship was attacked about 8:45 p.m. Warren Lasch with the Friends of the Hunley says scientists still have to examine the inner workings of the watch.  Tomorrow is the third anniversary of the raising of the submarine. It's being persevered in a lab at the old Charleston Navy Base in North Charleston.
