(Lexington)-
David and Brenda Jones say they're the average family. But
with a set of two-year-old twins and four-year-old triplets,
most would agree they're a little more than average.
“It's a handful, it's pretty hectic,” David said, “Of
course I work a full day on the job so she bears the brunt of
it during the day and then I come home and try to help out the
best I can.”
David says the ever-increasing property
taxes on his home have put a major strain on providing for his
family. “It just keeps going up every year. In the past five
years our property taxes have gone up 66%.”
But
Governor Mark Sanford signed a bill Saturday that should
relieve some of that strain. It eliminates the school
operation portion of property taxes for homeowners. A 60% cut
that will be made up with a 1% sales tax
increase.
Critics of this bill say a sales tax increase
will hurt more than it helps when it's time to go to the
store. But legislators say, along with property tax relief,
this bill will also give you a 40% tax break when you're
shopping for your family's groceries.
“I spend a lot of
money on groceries, you know 8 gallons of milk adds up
quickly,” Brenda said.
“It takes a lot of money over
the years of paying for those diapers, paying for that baby
food, it takes those things to build a family,” Governor
Sanford said, “This bill goes towards helping those families
hang on to what they've got.”
While the Jones say this
should keep them from bending over backwards to pay their
taxes, they know it won't be a cure all.
“I don't
expect everything to just be a magic pill that is going to
take everything away now, but it's a step in the right
direction.”
Voters will have to head to the polls for
this to become an amendment to the State Constitution. If it
becomes law, the property tax relief will begin in June 2007,
as will the sales tax increase. But you could see the grocery
tax relief as early as October.
