Haley Office of the Governor 1205 Pendleton Street Columbia, South Carolina 29201 Dear Mrs. Haley: Back in late June 2015, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage throughout the United States. Today, I am writing to you about how I believe that the state of South Carolina should be following in the footsteps of the state of Alabama on creating a Bill that would stop the issuing of marriage licenses and create marriage contracts; this stops judges from having to sign marriage licenses if they do not believe in same-sex marriage. I am apart of the Southern Baptist Church community in South Carolina. However, my religious beliefs and most of South Carolina's would support the idea of stopping the issuing of marriage licenses to same-sex couples. In turn this can help judges that uphold their religious beliefs to avoid charges being brought against them. The constitution allows all Americans to have free religious beliefs; by not fighting back against same-sex marriages in a conservative state, we are saying that Christians or any other religion do not have a say in their government. Governor, I am aware that it may be hard to take one side on a certain issue when some people in the state do not always agree. However, I would like if you can consider helping the judges that practice their religious beliefs and even pastors across the state. The Bill would be favored in the Southern Baptist Convention. I hope that you will consider my request. Sincerely, Hannah L. Gresham
