Subject: Visitation at MacDougall 6-4-16

Ms. Goines:  Your email to the Governor’s Office was forwarded to my office for review.  Your concerns included your loved one having been housed in 4 facilities over a two year period, and that every institution should comply with policy/guidelines in the same manner.  This was brought on by your being turned around at MacDougall due to the staff saying your jeans were inappropriate.  You also stated that you feel that some female officers wear their state issued uniforms much too tight.

Please know that we regret that due to the nature of our business, our guidelines are often very restrictive.  We have Duty Wardens present during visitation to assist in ensuring that we are consistent with what is acceptable and unacceptable.  Unfortunately, we are human and opinions can sometimes differ.  I appreciate your submitting your concerns and will address (not by name) with the Warden and ask that he review with his Duty Wardens how essential it is that we remain as consistent as possible.  The issue of the officers’ attire has already been forwarded to the appropriate staff for information.  In the future, if you have a concern, please feel free to leave a message on the Visitation Hotline (803-896-1838).  We will return your call within 24-48 business hours and try to assist you in any way that we can.

Again, thank you for sharing your concerns, as we truthfully regret all turn arounds though they are inevitable on occasion.  Hopefully, you won’t have any more difficulty in the future.

Sincerely, Alice V. Mascio
Division Director, Visitation and I/M DT
