Senators Kill Budget Bill
(Columbia-AP) -- Senate rules have killed the $5.3 billion dollar state budget that emerged yesterday from a conference committee meeting.

Senators sent the bill back to conference committee because wording was changed on a budget provision dealing with the state's Palmetto scholarships.

The House had adopted the budget earlier that afternoon, 72-to-37. But senators sent the bill back to conference committee.

A conference committee this morning approved the compromise version of the budget for the coming fiscal year.

Conference committee approval came after an eleven-hour, all night meeting of three representatives and three senators.

The General Assembly had hoped to vote on the spending plan today and get the bill to Governor Mark Sanford to avoid extending the session past June Fifth.
