The House has given tentative approval to a proposal to give the military a seat on the South Carolina Education Board.
The measure would ask the governor to appoint a military representative to the board as a nonvoting member.
Landrum Representative Bob Walker says military parents want to know what their child needs to be prepared for when they come to South Carolina.
Sally Patterson is school liaison officer at Fort Jackson.
She says a military board member would help draw attention to challenges facing students whose families move often.
Patterson says many students have questions about standardized tests, transferring credits and graduation requirements.
The current 17-member Education Board is a mix of mostly business leaders and educators from across the state.
