SLED probing missing money, allegations against St. George officer
ST. GEORGE — The State Law Enforcement Division has confirmed that missing town funds and an allegation of officer misconduct in the St. George Police Department are the subjects of two active investigations being conducted here.
St. George Mayor David Sojourner said one of the investigations involves missing funds from the town coffers. He said he knew nothing about the other investigation being made into the police department, other than that it is going on and that it was initiated by St. George Police Chief Sammy Smith.
SLED spokesperson Kathryn Richardson said, "There are two active investigations in St. George. One investigation involves missing funds and one investigation involves allegation of misconduct. These investigations are open; therefore, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment."
When asked if there were indeed funds missing from St. George's coffers, Sojourner said, "This is under investigation by SLED, and we can't comment on it. We don't have any exact figures. Our auditor is working on it, and SLED is working on it," he said.
Chief Smith could not be reached for comment.
